- Abstract
A country's water exploitation index (WEI) is calculated by dividing the mean annual total demand for freshwater by the long-term average freshwater resources. It indicates how total water demand puts pressure on the water resource. It also identifies countries with high demand in relation to their resources, making them vulnerable to water stress problems.
